Aim—
To apply a method of erasure on receipts found in my room, and see what the remains can tell me about the original document.
Context—
Ania Wawrzkowicz's series of 'ambiguous documents'.
Method—
Collect receipts/tax invoices of different formats and cut out the text.
Reflection on Action—
Upon completion of the experiment, I realised that by erasing the text, it anonymises the document. I didn't get the results that I was expecting, even though I tried to source different formats of receipts. Instead, I only gained information regarding the materiality and the layout of the documents. However, the thicker stock of the AGNSW tax invoice and the thinner stock of the receipt are undeniably characteristic of a receipt.
Reflection for Action—
I'm unsure what erasure has in store for me in the near future, especially as it removes the value of context to the object. Where my research is at the moment is potentially looking at objects for its emotional and sentimental value, which this experiment would remove, instead. However, I do like the outcome as a generative procedure.
